Several smartphone OEMs launched Android 12 developer preview programs for their handsets shortly after Google released the first Android 12 beta code.
In May of this year, Nokia was one of the first few manufacturers to announce a developer preview program for the Nokia X20. The first Android 12 developer preview build for the device has now been released by the company.
If one has a Nokia X20, then one can now install the Android 12 developer preview build on any device to get a sneak peek at the future OS before it goes live.
Download the newest version of the My Phone app on any Nokia X20 to join the developer preview program. Scroll to the bottom of the app and tap the Support banner.
Allow the app to check one IMEI by scrolling down to “Android developer preview.”
Once Nokia has confirmed that one device is eligible for the update, accept the software licensing terms and conditions, review the Important Notes, and then touch Confirm to proceed.
Within the following 12 hours, users should receive the Android 12 developer preview build through OTA update on their phone. Users can also try making a manual upgrade request to acquire the Android 12 developer preview version sooner.
Before anyone starts with the registrations, Nokia has underlined a few points that one should be aware of. These are some of them:
- Developer preview program builds (ADP) for Android 12 are early Android OS updates meant primarily for application developers; they are not advised for general use.
- Despite the development team’s thorough testing, the builds may have performance and/or stability difficulties in some circumstances.
- Some Google Play Store apps may not be supported (in whole or in part) and may display signs of instability.
- User data will be lost if you upgrade from Android 11 to the Android 12 developer preview program and then revert from the Android 12 developer preview program to the Official Android 11 release. As a result, we advise you to back up any user data to avoid losing it.
- Online support is limited, and it may not be available to assist users who are having problems.
Following the installation of the update, users may use the pre-installed Customer Feedback app to submit feedback on the release. If anyone runs into too many problems, then can request a rollback to the Android 11 release via the My Phone app.

Which Nokia Phones Will Get Android 12?
The Nokia X20 is HMD Global’s first Android 12 device. Starting with the Nokia X20, HMD Global released the first Android 12 upgrade this week. Users in the initial wave will get the update on December 17th, according to the business.
What Will Android 12 Bring?
Google claims that Android 12 (Go edition) will save battery life and storage by automatically “snoozing apps it hasn’t been used for long periods of time,” in addition to speed improvements that will help apps load up to 30% faster.
Good. That is exactly what HMD stated it would do, and it is doing so. It’s something we’d like to see.
The Nokia X20 is a largely nondescript gadget with a 6.67-inch 60Hz display, Snapdragon 480 engine, and four rear-facing cameras, so it’s understandable if people forgot about it. Indeed, its most appealing characteristics may be its solid support policy (three years of OS upgrades) and an exceptionally long three-year warranty.
In principle, that’s a wonderful strategy; as Jon Porter pointed out in his hands-on with the X20, the phone should still be covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee when Android 14 is released.
However, there’s no guarantee that HMD (or any other Android device vendor for that matter) would keep its promise of regular OS updates. To that end, Nokia recently reneged on its pledge to update the Nokia 9 Pure View to Android 11.
And, in general, the Android 12 rollout has proven a stumbling block. OnePlus has canceled the Oxygen OS upgrade for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, which was based on Android 12 and was problematic.
Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 have also reported issues with the Android 12 stable update. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro from Google appear to be affected as well. Even a supposedly solid Android 12 update for Nokia phones could be similarly problematic.
However, if the X20 is going to live up to its three-year warranty, it’s off to a good start.
