What is D2M Technology? “Is D2M technology worth it?”

What is D2M Technology?

The “direct-to-mobile” (D2M Technology) broadcasting technology offers to increase broadband usage and spectrum efficiency.

In order to broadcast video and other types of multimedia information directly to mobile phones without the need for an active internet connection, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and India’s public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati are testing the effectiveness of the technology.

D2M Technology is-

  1. Without an active internet connection, D2M technology enables the broadcasting of video and other multimedia material straight to mobile devices.
  2. Its foundation is the fusion of broadcast and broadband. Mobile phones will be able to get terrestrial digital TV using this technology.
  3. The FM radio on mobile phones, which can access radio frequencies, is comparable.
  4. It increases broadband usage and spectrum utilization.

What are the uses of D2M technology?

  1. Using this technology, content relating to citizen-centric information can be disseminated directly.
  2. It will aid in battling fake news, giving out emergency notifications, and providing disaster management support.
  3. On mobile devices, it can also be used to broadcast live sports and news.

What is Importance of D2M technology?

  1. Customers would be able to access multimedia content from OTT or VoD content sources using D2M technology without using up all of their mobile data.
  2. A little fee would be required for this service. It will also make it possible for residents of rural areas with poor or nonexistent internet connectivity to watch videos.
  3. Additionally, D2M technology will allow telecom service providers to offload business-related video traffic from their mobile network to the broadcast network. Thus, it will assist them in clearing up important mobile spectrum.
  4. The solution would increase mobile spectrum usage and free up capacity, eliminating call dropouts and boosting data speeds, among other things.

What are the challenges while Introducing D2M technology?

The “Major challenges” in introducing D2M technology on a larger scale for some Key stakeholders like mobile operator onboard.

What is direct to mobile/D2M broadcasting?

The technology, which enables mobile phones to receive terrestrial digital TV, is based on the convergence of broadband and broadcast. It would function similarly to how FM radio is heard on mobile phones, where a receiver can pick up radio frequencies. Multimedia content can also be transmitted directly to phones via D2M.

The system is designed with the possibility of being used to directly broadcast information aimed toward citizens. It can also be used, among other things, to combat fake news, send out emergency alerts, and aid in disaster management. In addition, it can be used to stream live sports, news, and other content to mobile devices. Furthermore, no internet bandwidth should be used while the content streams without any buffering at all.

What could be the consumer and business impact of this?

With the help of such technologies, consumers might access multimedia content via Video on Demand (VoD) or Over The Top (OTT) content providers without using up all of their mobile data, and more crucially, at a reasonable cost. The technology will also make it possible for residents of rural areas with little or no access to the internet to watch videos.

The ability of telecom service providers to transfer video traffic from their mobile network onto the broadcast network, so assisting them in decongesting valuable mobile spectrum, is one of the technology’s primary advantages for enterprises. Additionally, by improving mobile spectrum usage and freeing up bandwidth, these actions will assist to decrease call dropouts, boost data speeds, and other things.

What is the government doing to facilitate D2M technology?

According to DoT Secretary K Rajaraman on Wednesday (June), the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has formed a committee to investigate the feasibility of a spectrum band for providing broadcast services directly to people’ mobile. “It is intended for band 526-582 MHz to function in conjunction with both mobile and broadcast services. A committee has been formed by the DoT to investigate this band, he said. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting now uses this frequency for TV transmitters all around the nation.

Last year, the public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati formed a partnership with IIT Kanpur to investigate the viability of the technology.

What are the possible challenges to the technology’s rollout?

The “greatest hurdle” in widely introducing D2M technology, according to Prasar Bharati’s CEO, will be enlisting crucial stakeholders like cellphone operators. Apurva Chandra, secretary of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, stated that infrastructure changes and some regulatory adjustments will be necessary for a widespread use of the technology.

Is D2M (direct to mobile) technology worth it?

Yes, D2M technology is worth it because mobile phones will soon be able to get terrestrial digital TV using a technology called D2M. D2M uses radio signals to deliver video content straight to mobile devices. It increases broadband usage and spectrum utilization. First time this has happened in India Government has taken step to launch D2M in India to access mobile data free content with help of radio signal.
