Cyberpunk 2077 Fixes: Is Controversial Game Finally Fixed?

We examine if Cyberpunk 2077 is still enjoyable when millions of people pick it up again

Cyberpunk 2077 Fixes- If you haven’t heard, a lot of people have recently been playing the video game Cyberpunk 2077. While the success of Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series can be largely credited for the game’s rise in popularity, many people have also started to wonder, as we did above, “Is Cyberpunk 2077 finally fixed?”

In case you forgot, the publication of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 was a complete failure. The game was a technological nightmare that was also devoid of several important features. Overall, a lot of folks who enthusiastically played CD Projekt Red’s (production-wise) sequel to The Witcher 3 found it to be disrespectful in a lot of ways and just never looked back once they left the game.

Others made the choice to hold off until the game’s numerous technical issues were finally fixed in order to have a fairly fair opportunity to evaluate the remaining experience.

So, even though it seems bizarre to still be discussing Cyberpunk 2077’s numerous issues in 2022, let’s take a look at where the game is right now.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 Finally Playable on PS4 and Xbox One?

The “last-gen” (PS4 and Xbox One) versions of Cyberpunk 2077 had the majority of the game’s significant technical flaws when it first released, albeit having many other issues. When Cyberpunk 2077 was released for those consoles, it was almost unplayable due to bugs, poor visuals, severe AI problems, and game-breaking crashes. Because of the dire circumstances, Sony decided to remove that edition of Cyberpunk 2077 from their online store.

Since then, the game’s creator CD Projekt Red has made a number of patches that aim to both correct and improve those earlier iterations of the title. So, are those consoles finally capable of supporting Cyberpunk 2077? It ain’t getting much more playable, to borrow one of my favourite Simpsons quips, for sure.

Look, playing Cyberpunk on the PS4 or Xbox One is still not the best option. They have a scruffy appearance, still experience framerate problems, and occasionally experience plain strange abnormalities (missing pedestrians, disappearing objects, etc.). You’ll still have to put up with a number of technical flaws and disadvantages if you choose to play Cyberpunk 2077 on those systems. On such consoles, there will probably never be a completely fluid version of the game.

There is no doubting, however, that the Cyberpunk 2077 last-gen upgrades changed the game’s playability from “unplayable” to “nonoptimal.” In many people’s minds, those versions of the game now function well enough and are free of their most significant technical issues. Although it’s clear that this isn’t a glowing endorsement, anyone wishing to play the game on those devices will discover that this is the best experience they will ever have. I mean that literally once again.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game are as “fixed” as they’re ever going to be now that CD Projekt Red has issued the final PS4/Xbox One update they presently intend to release for the title. If they decide to surprise everyone with extra last-gen patches, that is.

In the end, I’m still unable to suggest those versions of the game to anyone who doesn’t have an intense desire to play Cyberpunk 2077 and no other method to do so. Additionally, people who can get a cheap copy of the game on those systems for $20 or less may be encouraged to overlook some of those drawbacks and play the game as much as they can on those platforms. There are always these fantastic Cyberpunk 2077 alternatives for everyone else, though.

Did Cyberpunk 2077’s Next-Gen Update Improve the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Of the Game?

Unbelievably, CD Projekt Red did indeed release the next-generation update for Cyberpunk 2077 earlier this year. Although the upgrade ought to have been made available much sooner than it actually was, I must admit that it significantly enhanced the game’s next-generation editions.

To cut to the chase, Performance Mode on PS5 or Xbox Series X will result in a much enhanced framerate and a fairly steady experience when playing Cyberpunk 2077. However, the game continues to experience a few small problems and graphic issues like texture pop-in (as well as the occasional bit of slowdown). On next-generation consoles, those significant technical concerns, however, are largely resolved. Running in Performance Mode makes Cyberpunk 2077 feel very much like the game its creators presumably meant for you to play right away.

It’s the version of the game that allows you to evaluate Cyberpunk 2077 on its creative merits—or lack thereof—instead of having to continuously pay attention to all the bugs, malfunctions, and game-breaking problems.

Sadly, the Ray Tracing mode in Cyberpunk 2077 is a bit more hit or miss on both systems. This mode excels at its primary purpose, which is to enhance the lighting and shadows in the game using Ray Tracing. Certain areas of Cyberpunk 2077 appear as a contemporary game might when Ray Tracing is enabled. You can see exactly what I mean if you switch on Ray Tracing and go through the city at night in the rain.

However, Ray Tracing doesn’t really help in several significant parts of Cyberpunk 2077. You probably won’t see many of the gains the function is intended to provide if you’re strolling about during the day or navigating an industrial space, for example. What you’ll observe are the framerate decreases that go along with that feature.

Although the framerate in Ray Tracing mode is intended to be closer to 30 FPS than the 60 FPS Performance Mode aims for, it can occasionally go below that threshold. Because of this, the majority of players will probably favour Performance Mode, while Ray Tracing is undoubtedly interesting to try out occasionally.

Additionally, the overall performance of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game is comparable. If you twist my arm just right, I’d say the Xbox Series X is generally more stable while the PS5 offers a marginally greater performance maximum. However, unless you really appreciate the DualSense control options in the PS5 models, neither console really outperforms the other (such as adaptive trigger feedback). I should also point out that the loading times in all versions have been much improved, making the game considerably better than it previously was.

Don’t anticipate much from the Xbox Series S, to be honest. The PS5/Xbox Series X versions of the game are definitely inferior to that version, while the PS4/Xbox One versions are unquestionably superior. That’s about what you’d anticipate from that hardware, I suppose, but you get the impression that CD Projekt Red could have done more with that platform if they had had a more technically sound base from which to build. It’s still a great middle-of-the-road choice, though.

Additionally, I should mention that CD Projekt Red is still working to make the PS5/Xbox Series X versions of the game better. Theoretically, they can only get better from here, but I expect that the majority of future enhancements will concentrate on bug repairs and optimizations rather than any kind of significant updates that make the game appear to have been designed from the beginning for next-generation hardware.

Is the PC Version of Cyberpunk 2077 Still the Best Version of the Game?

For those who wanted to experience playing Cyberpunk 2077 as if it were a game that was always meant to be released, the PC version was not only the best, but also the only way to play the game at launch. The PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 is still the greatest way to play the game, even though the console versions are now considerably better than they once were.

The “floor and ceiling” performances make the difference. At debut, Cyberpunk 2077’s PC version was by far the greatest, therefore it also needed the fewest substantial performance improvements (relatively speaking). To put it another way, CD Projekt Red was able to concentrate on optimizing the PC version of the game earlier than they were able to do the same for the console versions.

As a result, Cyberpunk 2077 plays well on a range of PCs (apart from the aforementioned brief periods of lingering technical difficulties). Cyberpunk 2077 will likely run more smoothly for people who play it on a low-end PC that satisfies the game’s performance requirements as opposed to PS4 and Xbox One.

The people who will enjoy it most are high-end PC gamers, though. You’re in for a treat if you’re running Cyberpunk 2077 on a top-tier GPU (with the processor and RAM that normally go with that kind of GPU). The only version of Cyberpunk 2077 that currently has a realistic chance of keeping a consistently high framerate with all of the game’s visual features enabled is the PC version. Again, it’s not flawless, but Cyberpunk 2077 turns out to look absolutely stunning when you play it on the most advanced hardware. Oh, right.

Additionally, it should be mentioned that Cyberpunk 2077’s PC version substantially benefits from mod support. While modders have been modifying and growing Cyberpunk 2077 since it was released, CD Projekt Red has added more material to the game (more on that in a moment). The game’s mod community is still, at the very least, one of the finest places to go if you want to address a few particular problems that have persisted. In the best case scenario, you might be able to use such mods to solve some of your unique game-related issues in a way that the official updates just can’t.

Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on a PS5 or Xbox Series X instead of a PC is generally a good idea if those consoles have much more power than your computer does. But it’s still the simplest to suggest the PC version of the game to a larger user base.

Has Cyberpunk 2077 Been Updated With Any New Content Since It Was Released?

You should be aware that there is technically more to do in Cyberpunk 2077 than ever before if you’ve been holding off on playing the game (or playing it for the first time) while you wait for new updates. However, be mindful to manage your expectations (as with other Cyberpunk 2077-related matters).

CD Projekt Red has made various little additions to Cyberpunk 2077 after the game’s release. Said improvements include the option to “transmogrify” your appearance, which allows you to pick how you appear regardless of the armour you’re wearing, as well as new jobs, weapons, vehicles, and bonuses. One of the game’s most significant improvements even enables you to rent various apartments across the city (and receive small buffs for using certain facilities in those apartments).

You must also take into account how various technical and mechanical advancements in Cyberpunk 2077 fundamentally altered how you may play the game.

For instance, you could notice that some game portions now behave more dynamically than they did before because of the game’s A.I. You might feel motivated to try out new tactics or take on challenging tasks now that the driving and shooting systems have been updated in the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 felt a little bit different than it did before with every small adjustment. Even new approaches to finish missions and other tasks were made possible by some game fixes.

But what if you’ve already completed Cyberpunk 2077? Is it worthwhile to reinstall the game solely to experience the fresh content? Well, most likely not. You’re eventually talking about a small army of little things, but I believe that all of the subtle tweaks together provide a really excellent cause for a second playthrough if you were previously thinking about doing one.

If you thought that Cyberpunk 2077 simply lacked too many important features and deleted chunks of content, you should be aware that the majority of those elements still aren’t included in the game. Those kinds of big upgrades to Cyberpunk 2077 certainly won’t be available until the game’s New Game+ mode and Phantom Liberty DLC are eventually launched. Still, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the game some people (including the game’s developers) made it out to be.

However, if you generally like the initial experience or chose to put it aside till a few additional items became accessible, I’d say that enough is new or “different” about the game to justify giving it another try.

Get to the Point: Is Cyberpunk 2077 Worth Playing in 2022?

I’m one of those odd folks who, when Cyberpunk 2077 was out, kind of enjoyed it. The game played smoothly on my PC and struck me as a somewhat more ambitious version of a contemporary Deus Ex game that also has enough RPG aspects to appeal to my inner genre nerd. I voted to have the game be a part of our “best of 2020” list because I felt that it was creatively deserving of being there. Cyberpunk 2077 offers experiences that are definitely worthwhile.

But I also wasn’t eagerly anticipating the game’s arrival for years, nor did I regard myself as a member of the CD Projekt Red “cult of genius” that has only gotten stronger in the time since The Witcher 3’s release. I entered Cyberpunk 2077 with a slightly more open mind, and I discovered a game that did a lot of things I loved as well as a lot of things that were either lacking or just bad ideas.

On the one hand, I’m confident in claiming that Cyberpunk 2077’s previously problematic technological flaws have been resolved to the point where the game’s strongest points are now more apparent than ever. Separating yourself from expectations has some merit as well. It’s lot simpler to appreciate Cyberpunk 2077 for what it is now that we have a clear understanding of what it is.

On the other hand, it’s hard to blame anyone who felt burned by Cyberpunk 2077 and chose to give the game a final pass. Simply put, Cyberpunk 2077 shouldn’t have been made available in the condition it was. That assertion refers to the game’s absurd technical issues as well as the numerous clues that the release version wasn’t even close to being an accurate representation of the intended final product.

To make matters worse, CD Projekt Red has handled the Cyberpunk 2077 post-launch scenario poorly so far. The earliest game fixes didn’t do much to fix the biggest problems. I’m prepared to guess that many of you are only now learning about the more significant updates because they were not only delayed, but also so badly explained. While there are many very genuine (and understandable) human and economic considerations that have played a part in the delays of those upgrades, those factors may not be much solace to those who may have felt that Cyberpunk 2077 was a little bit of a rip-off when it first came out.

Honestly, I enjoy playing Cyberpunk 2077. For the appropriate player, it may even be a really nice game. I can also tell you that you can go back into the water if the game’s technical issues were the main thing keeping you from enjoying it. Although technically imperfect, Cyberpunk 2077 has been “fixed” in that regard.

However, for some who believed Cyberpunk 2077’s numerous problems rendered it unsalvageable or that the game simply wasn’t the kind of open-world RPG experience they were seeking for… Well, I kind of doubt the issues you had with the game will be resolved in the updated version. Cyberpunk 2077 might not ever be that kind of game, for that matter.

I would push a little harder to recommend that we all create place in our hearts to give Cyberpunk 2077 a second opportunity and recognize how far it has come if it were a surprise release from a small studio. I’ll say instead that Cyberpunk 2077 is now simpler to play than it is to forgive given the circumstances.
