PS Plus Subscribers Down Nearly 2 Million Following June’s Revamp

Is the service in trouble, or are larger concerns to blame?

PS Plus Subscribers Down Nearly 2 Million Following June’s Revamp. Sony reported in its most recent financial results that PlayStation Plus lost approximately 2 million users between July and September 2022, following its relaunch in June.

The service’s subscriber base declined from 47.3 million to 45.4 million when Sony introduced tiers to the service, that at its most basic level provide online gaming, additional features such as cloud saves, and a couple of free titles each month. Just at Extra level, the new tiers provide you access to a huge portfolio of PlayStation 4 as well as PlayStation 5 titles, while the Premium level gives you access to classic games and game streaming.

Sony stated in its second-quarter financial report that PS Plus has lost over two million customers after the format holder restructured the service into a three-tier plan in June.

This is the third year in a row that PS Plus’s membership numbers has decreased, with subscribers totaling 45.4 million for the three-month period ending September 30, 2022. This is a decrease from the previous quarter’s total of 47.3 million. Meanwhile, monthly active users fell to 102 million, down from 104 million the previous year.

During the results call, Sony’s CFO, Hiroki Totoki, blamed decreased third-party game sales and’more people going outside.’

The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has been falling. However, they renewed their services in the second quarter, but there hasn’t been much overall momentum. In addition, they did not make aggressive promotions in the second quarter.

As a result, they will have more penetration on PS5 in the future, as well as extremely strong titles. Furthermore, they are able to do better promotions, and they believe they will be able to recover.

Totoki-san also commented on important third-party releases, especially Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is having “a good release” and has “extremely high expectations for the third quarter.”

During the same results call, Sony stated that the PS5 had now sold 25 million units globally.
